State of Wellness Summit - Thank You!!

Victoria’s inaugural State Of Wellness Women’s Summit, supported by Bendigo Bank and the Canny Group, was held in Geelong on Thursday, October 10th 2019. Coinciding with World Mental Health Awareness Day last Thursday, it was an auspicious day for Geelong to host Victoria’s first State of Wellness Women’s Summit at GMHBA Stadium. Fourteen expert speakers spoke to a full house of women, who travelled from all over the state to learn more about all aspects of health, wellbeing and sustainable living. 

 

The Summit aimed to empower women to create sustainable positive change in their lives, bringing together the best of our region’s wellness experts to inspire, encourage and guide women to live a healthy, happy and successful life. Women of all ages heard from a curated range of keynote speakers, and engaged in activities, a wellness expo and enjoyed nutritious food throughout the one-day event.

 

 

It was a wonderful day for like-minded people to come together and learn, exploring ways to enhance their wellbeing on all levels and finding ways to live with joy, harmony and fun. The honourable MP Christine Couzens opened the event and spoke honestly about issues facing women in today’s society.

 

Torquay’s Jo Surkitt, from Revitalize Lifestyle, designed the State Of Wellness event to raise awareness and provide education to engage, support and enable women to make good choices around their physical and mental health, family, work and overall wellbeing.

 

According to Beyond Blue, around 1 in 6 women in Australia will experience depression and 1 in 3 women will experience anxiety during their lifetime, Jo Surkitt felt an event focussing on Women’s Wellness was needed and by the fact it was sold out she was right.   Jo was overwhelmed with all the wonderful and positive feedback from the event.  “I was delighted with the outcome of event, so many women spoke to me throughout the day telling me that the day had changed their perspective on life and how much the event meant to them.” Jo said

 

 

The Summit covered wide ranging topics from hormones to nutrition, gut health to mental and emotional health, career to personal goals, fitness, overcoming illness, trauma and life challenges, rewiring the brain to creating healthy habits with guidance provided by passionate, flexible and resilient industry experts concluding with a transformational sound healing session.

 

The keynote speaker, Olympic Taekwondo Gold Medallist, Lauren Burns, was a highlight with her background as an elite sports person, naturopath, nutritionist and a mum, talking about the ups and downs, highs and lows of balancing life.

 

Amongst the guest speakers included Roxie Bennett (MC), Positive Change Creator Jo Surkitt, Motivational Speaker Jane Kinnear, Naturopath Rebecca Winkler and Deakin's Food & Mood Centre's team, joined by other industry leading wellness specialists.

The Summit also offered a wonderful array of 20 local businesses showcasing their products and services in the Positive Change expo, with participants walking away with a wealth of knowledge.

 

Overall, the aim was to arm women with strategies to be their best, and plan a future that integrates clarity with peace, success, good health and joy, by learning skills to live a healthy and sustainable way of life.   This will be a biennial event for the Geelong region.

State of Wellness Women's Summit - Empowering Women to create Positive Change

The topic of wellness has been making the rounds as of late, and for good reason. With stress-related diseases on the rise along with other preventable chronic illnesses, incorporating a good wellness program is not only good for your employees but also good for business.  Business Events Geelong sits down with Revitalize Lifestyle’s Jo Surkitt to chat wellness and the launch of her wellness summit.

Why is workplace wellness important?

Having worked in corporate wellness for 20 years I have seen the enormous benefit health and wellness programs have had on the employees.  The key benefits I have seen are staff are more focused, inspired and motivated, they are able to manage their stress well, human resources notice a big decline in sick leave, injury and stress leave, staff are more productive, employee engagement improves, the emotional intelligence of both the managers and staff is stronger, leading to better resilience and self-regulation and less absenteeism and overall people are happier to come to work as they feel supported.  It’s a win/win for everyone in the organisation.’

The topic of wellness has become very trendy lately, why do you think that is?

According to the Global Wellness Institute,  the global wellness market grew to 4.2  trillion in 2017 from 3.36 trillion in 2013.  People are now more conscious about not only their physical health they are researching and engaging in activities that improve their emotional and mental health as well.  Workplaces and individuals are also noticing how food and stress can affect how they feel, act and behave.  Having more access to a large range of products and services has helped enhance the awareness and accessibility of choosing a healthier way to live which is fantastic ’

People are experiencing positive effects from eating healthy foods, exercising, practising meditation, being out in nature and engaging in self-care activities such as massage, seeing a naturopath, going to the gym, cycling or trying out new hobbies.  They realize we need time out from our busy, hectic schedules to recalibrate, heal and rejuvenate so we don’t get burnt out.

Tell us a little bit about the State of Wellness summit you’re launching

The summit has been established for women to learn new tools and strategies to create new sustainable habits in their busy lives that will allow them to live a joyful, balanced and healthy life.  Women will learn from experts in all areas of health, wellbeing and conscious living and also have the opportunity to meet likeminded people.  It’s like a Girl’s Day Out’ where they will leave with an abundance of ideas, strategies and products that will help them transform any part of their life.

Any parting words of advice?

Women will be inspired, educated and motivated to live their life to their full potential, at whatever stage of life they are at.

Emotional Intelligence delivers real business smarts for the future - innovative workshop coming to Geelong

You might know your area of expertise back-to-front and be a leader in your field.

But it's not what you know but how you understand yourself and relate to others that will give you the winning edge at work and in your personal life.

The term Emotional Intelligence refers to how well individuals handle themselves and each other, and the good news is it can be learnt. Specialists in the field two passionate locals, Melanie Kearsey and Jo Surkitt will share their insights at a one-day workshop in Geelong this November.

"With technology changing the way so many industries do business, one thing that won't change is how highly developed emotional intelligence can turn managers into truly effective leaders and, workers into deeply engaged employees," the pair say.

Having worked closely with high profile clients such as Cotton On, BP and Vodafone, they have developed a program that includes their best tips and tricks to help participants develop their own skill set they can use both at work and in their personal life.

Melanie says that she and Jo developed the program based on the strong demand from local businesses, “Our corporate clients kept telling us similar things, they’d say; we want our team to get along better, we want people to communicate more effectively and improve employee engagement, we want people to be able to manage their emotional state and to feel less stressed.  Jo and I heard loud and clear what our clients wanted to learn, and that’s why we’ve developed this program.”

Participants will learn how to manage how they think and feel, express themselves more assertively, navigate conflict, manage negative emotions, regulate their emotional state, and create positive personal habits and routines to boost time management and organisational skills.

Melanie and Jo will teach workshop participants how to manage stress, cope with fear & failure, develop meta-cognition strategies that involve noticing and managing your own thinking and developing skills to adopt more resourceful, constructive thinking and behaviours. Practical mindfulness, yoga and movement exercises will also be incorporated.

Managers will benefit from the course by learning how to increase employee engagement within the workplace as well as improving their ability to lead, inspire and influence people.  The program aims to boost workplace productivity, improve individual and group behavior and performance, and lower staff stress and absenteeism.  Anyone wanting to feel more optimistic, energised and motivated at work and in his or her personal pursuits will find the course valuable.

The Emotional Intelligence workshop will be held at the Novotel on Geelong's picturesque waterfront on  8th November. Participants will enjoy delicious meals from a menu designed by renowned nutritionist Michele Chevalley-Hedge.

They will leave the workshop armed with a wealth of material detailing the tools, techniques and exercises covered during the program.
